Background
The Nordic Centre in India has an agreement with the University of Hyderabad (UoH) and its Study India Program (SIP) that enables us to send 15 Nordic students to Hyderabad to study there for a full semester. The aim of the agreement is to allow Nordic students to study India in India, to give you both a sound academic knowledge of India as well as the experience you only gain by living there. In most cases, the UoH degree should count towards you final degree at your home university.
Duration
The Hyderabad semester last from third week of July to first week of December and from first week of January to first week of May.
Hyderabad, the University of Hyderabad, and the Study India Program at UoH
Hyderabad is a large metropolis situated in Andhra Pradesh, and forms a cultural crossroad between North and South India. It was for centuries the capital of the fabulous Nizams (princes) of Hyderabad, and many of the palaces and forts are still very much part of the city's landscape. Today, with a population of nearly 8 million and a very successful IT industry, it is one of modern India's most energetic cities. Of its two universities, the University of Hyderabad is a centrally funded university and is deemed one of India's five best. It is located outside of the city in a huge and quiet campus. The Study India Program at UoH has several years of experience in offering courses and programs for foreign students, in particular working with two large US university programs.
Courses, credits and academic program
Choose among courses offered at various departments and centres of the university. For information on the courses offered, check out the relevant departmental web-sites at the university's website: http://www.uohyd.info/index.php. It is important to note, that there might be last minute changes in the final list of courses offered each term. The SIP faculty can assist students in finding out the most suitable courses. The students can also try out different courses during the first week of the semester.
All courses are in English. Mostly, you are expected to follow courses at the School of Humanities or the School of Social Sciences, but you may choose courses from departments in other Schools as well. Participants in the semester program are expected to pursue a fulltime academic program, which means a full credit load of 16 credits (30 ECTS), spread over 4 courses. To ensure that your credits from UoH count towards your degree at home, and also to ensure financial support if required, you should talk to the International Office at your home university. Requirements differ between different Nordic universities, as do procedures for translating foreign degrees.
Extras: Foreign and Indian semester students at UoH regularly combine their studies with yoga classes, course in Indian art, classes in Indian languages, etc. as and when offered. There is also a good Sports Centre at the campus.
