Short Term Training course

Contemporary India

Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh

India is among the largest nations in the world and faces important challenges as well as tremendous opportunities for the future. This intensive 4 week summer course for Nordic students will give thorough insights into major issues and will familiarise participants with India's rich social, literary and religious culture.

For more extensive details see last year's Course programme.

The course will be held at the University of Hyderabad campus and is organised by the Study in India Programme there. The participants will be housed in student hostels. All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be served at the Tagore International Student Guesthouse. The course will consist of morning lectures, various cultural programs, papers, and some afternoon tuition. There will also be some excursions.

A Summer in Hyderabad

Hyderabad is a sprawling and rapidly expanding city in South India, with all the features of a modern Indian city. For several centuries it was the capital of a large and wealthy South Indian kingdom, semi-independent of British India and only included in the Indian republic after Independence. The city has inherited a blend of North and South Indian culture and exhibits both architectural and cultural richness.

Today’s Hyderabad is one of India’s most dynamic cities, with an expanding economy based in IT and high-tech expertise. The climate in summer is warm to pleasantly warm.

The course is tailor-made for Nordic university students – with a few years’ study experience but not necessarily more than basic knowledge about India. Students of all disciplines are invited to apply – from political science, anthropology, history, history of religion, development studies, social geography etc.

The course is designed with Nordic students and university systems in mind. This means the course may count towards your bachelor’s or master’s degree. Because of differences between Nordic institutions you need to ask your home institution how to translate and make use of the credits. The course gives you 5 credit points (equivalent to 7.5 ECTS). It is an intensive course with daily lectures, excursions and other activities on the weekends, prepatory readings as well submission of papers during the course.

One can also choose to earn 10 ECTS for the same course by doing some extra coursework in the same period of time. Further details will be provided to interested applicants and applicants who come from universites that cannot accomodate a 7.5 ECTS credit transfer.
